As a highly flexible piping component, rubber expansion joints can effectively protect pumps, valves, and metal pipes from mechanical stress and fatigue damage.

Key applications include:

I. Municipal Engineering Systems

In urban water supply networks, reservoirs, and sewage treatment plants, the start-up and shutdown of water pumps generate strong water hammer effects and mechanical vibrations.

Core Function: Rubber expansion joints are installed at the inlet and outlet of water pumps to reduce vibration and noise and absorb axial displacement caused by uneven foundation settlement.

Material Selection: EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber) is commonly used, as it possesses excellent water resistance, ozone resistance, and aging resistance.

 

II. HVAC Systems

In the central air conditioning circulating water systems of commercial buildings, data centers, and industrial plants, chilled water and cooling water pipes experience complex temperature variations year-round.

Core Functions: Compensating for thermal expansion and contraction displacement caused by seasonal temperature differences, while simultaneously isolating low-frequency noise transmitted to the building structure from chiller units, pumps, and cooling towers.

Material Selection: Commonly used EPDM material, capable of stable operation in ambient or medium-temperature water environments over extended periods.

 

III. Power Generation 

Whether it's a thermal power plant, nuclear power plant, or large-scale district heating station, the pipe diameters of their condenser circulating water systems and boiler feedwater systems are typically extremely large.

Core Function: Large-diameter rubber expansion joints are used to absorb the lateral and angular displacement caused by the huge cooling water flow, alleviating the mechanical stress on the interfaces of the massive condenser.

Material Selection: Depending on the media requirements, high-strength cord-reinforced EPDM or wear-resistant natural rubber are often selected.

 

IV. Petrochemical & Chemical Industry 

The media transported in chemical pipelines are often highly corrosive and operate under extreme conditions such as high pressure and alternating temperatures.

Core Function: Provides a leak-free, flexible connection to prevent pipeline breakage due to stress concentration, thereby avoiding the leakage of hazardous chemicals.

Material Selection:The lining is typically upgraded to PTFE or the base material is selected from nitrile rubber (NBR, oil-resistant) or fluororubber (FKM, resistant to strong acids, alkalis, and high temperatures).

 

V. Marine & Offshore Engineering 

Marine main engine cooling systems, ballast water systems, and bilge drainage pipes are constantly exposed to the harsh marine environment of turbulence, rolling, and high salt spray.

Core Function: Absorbing the combined displacements caused by hull deformation and high-frequency engine vibrations during navigation.

Material selection: It needs to have high salt spray resistance and corrosion resistance, and mostly uses special rubber composite materials that are seawater resistant and oil resistant and certified by classification societies.
