Industrial Flexible Metal Hoses Selection and Fault Prevention Guide

Why do stainless steel flexible metal hoses fail or leak prematurely?

Torsional Stress (Twisting): Metal hoses are designed to bend in a single plane. Twisting the hose during installation locks shear stress into the corrugations, destroying its fatigue life within cycles.

Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC): When 304 or even 316 stainless steel operates in high-temperature environments containing trace chlorides (like coastal air or chemical cleaning agents), it can crack rapidly.

Velocity Abrasion: High-velocity media, especially with abrasive particles, can wear down the internal crests of the corrugations. An internal liner must be used if velocities exceed manufacturer limits.

Braid Wear: If the outer stainless steel wire braid is allowed to rub against concrete or sharp metal edges, the individual strands will snap, reducing the hose's ability to handle internal pressure.

How do I determine the correct minimum bend radius for a flexible metal hose?

Exceeding the minimum bend radius (MBR) is the number one cause of premature hose failure. Every hose specification sheet provides two distinct values:

Static Bend Radius: The minimum radius allowed for a permanent, fixed installation where no motion occurs.

Dynamic Bend Radius: The minimum radius allowed for applications involving continuous or intermittent flexing, such as on reciprocating machinery.

To measure it properly, calculate the radius of the centerline of the hose loop, not the inside edge. If your application forces the hose into a tighter bend than specified, the corrugated wave profile will experience severe stress concentration, leading to rapid metal fatigue cracking.

When should I choose a double-braided metal hose over a single-braid design?

The outer wire braid is what gives a corrugated metal hose its hoop strength and prevents it from elongating axially under pressure. You need to upgrade to a double-braid configuration under two specific conditions:

High-Pressure Requirements: When the system's operating pressure exceeds the maximum safe limit of a single-braided hose of that specific diameter.

Severe Pressure Pulses / Water Hammer: If the application involves frequent hydraulic shocks, rapid cycling, or pulsating pumps, a single braid will stretch and degrade quickly. The second layer stabilizes the hose assembly, dampens vibration, and increases the overall safety factor.

Can a flexible metal hose be used for vibration elimination in piping systems?

Yes, but it must be installed correctly to be effective. A flexible metal hose is highly efficient at isolating high-frequency, low-amplitude vibrations, such as those generated by compressors, pumps, and chillers.

However, to absorb vibration properly, the hose must be installed perpendicular to the direction of the vibration. If a pump vibrates horizontally, the metal hose should run vertically. Installing a hose in-line with the vibration forces it to compress and extend axially; because metal hoses cannot tolerate longitudinal compression, they will rigidify and transfer the vibration rather than absorbing it.
